Green Tea Benefits

Yes, Tetley green tea is good for you, in the same way any plain green tea is. A cup has almost no calories, around 33 mg of caffeine (about a third of a mug of coffee), and catechin antioxidants. It may modestly help focus and cholesterol. It will not melt fat or prevent cancer on its own.

That is the honest version. Here is what is behind it, what is proven, and what Tetley’s labels can and cannot tell you.

What is actually in a Tetley green tea bag?

Tetley green tea is ordinary green tea (leaves of Camellia sinensis that are steamed or pan fired instead of oxidised like black tea), cut fine to fit a tea bag. There is no special Tetley ingredient that changes the health picture. Any benefit you get comes from green tea itself, so you would get much the same from another brand of similar quality.

The range differs by country, but you will usually see:

  • Tetley Pure Green / Pure Original. Just green tea. This is the one to choose if health is your main reason for drinking it.
  • Tetley Green Tea Lemon & Honey. Green tea with flavourings. Check your pack: in most versions the lemon and honey come from flavourings, not enough real honey to add meaningful sugar or calories.
  • Tetley Green Tea Ginger, Mint & Lemon. Sold widely in India, with flavourings for ginger, mint and lemon.
  • Other flavours (such as plain lemon or mint) appear in some markets.

The flavoured versions are still green tea underneath, so the core benefits are the same. If you want to compare green tea styles more widely, see our guide to different green tea kinds and their flavours.

Does Tetley green tea have caffeine?

Yes. Tetley’s US site lists 33 mg of caffeine per cup of its green tea, and Tetley’s UK FAQ says a cup of green or black tea contains 30 to 50 mg, depending on how much tea is in the bag and how long you brew it.

Drink (one cup)Approximate caffeine
Tetley green tea30 to 50 mg (Tetley USA: 33 mg)
Tetley black tea30 to 50 mg
Filter coffeeabout 95 mg
Decaf teaa few mg

So it is a gentle lift, not a jolt. Most healthy adults are advised to stay under about 400 mg of caffeine a day, and around 200 mg in pregnancy, which leaves room for several cups. A longer brew means more caffeine, so steep for 2 minutes if you are sensitive. For more numbers, see our post on tea caffeine content.

What Tetley green tea does to your body: the benefits with real evidence

These are the effects of green tea that research supports reasonably well. They apply to Tetley because Tetley green tea is green tea, not because of anything brand specific.

A calm kind of focus

Green tea combines caffeine with L theanine, an amino acid found almost only in tea. Short term studies suggest the pair improves attention and alertness with fewer jitters than the same caffeine from coffee. This is the most consistent benefit, and you can feel it within an hour of a cup.

Slightly better cholesterol numbers

Reviews of controlled trials find green tea and its catechins lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by a small amount. Large studies in Japan and China also link regular green tea drinking with lower rates of heart disease and stroke. Those are observational, so they show an association rather than proof that tea caused it. Still, it is the best supported long term benefit.

A zero calorie swap

A cup of plain Tetley green tea has around 2 calories. Its biggest weight benefit is simple: it replaces sugary drinks, juice or milky coffee. If that swap is the only change you make, it can still matter.

What is NOT proven (despite what you may read)

Plenty of articles, including the old version of this one, claim much more. Here is where the evidence actually stands.

  • Weight loss. Green tea catechins and caffeine can slightly raise energy use, but a Cochrane review of trials found the resulting weight loss was very small and not clinically important. Tea will not do the work of diet and activity.
  • Cancer prevention. Lab and animal studies are promising and some population studies show links, but human trials have not shown that drinking green tea prevents cancer. The US FDA has rejected or tightly limited such claims.
  • Immunity and “killing viruses”. Catechins can affect bacteria and viruses in a petri dish. That does not mean a cup of tea protects you from infection.
  • Skin. Most skin research uses green tea applied to the skin or concentrated extracts. Drinking a few cups has not been shown to clear acne or slow ageing.
  • Bones, teeth and longevity. Tea contains some fluoride, and some studies link tea drinking with better bone density and longer life, but the results are mixed and observational.
  • Liver. Brewed green tea is not known to harm a healthy liver. High dose green tea extract supplements, however, have been linked to rare cases of liver injury. A tea bag is not the same as a capsule.

Is Tetley green tea good for your stomach?

It depends on your stomach. There is no strong evidence that green tea heals or protects the gut. What we do know is that its tannins and caffeine can cause nausea or acid discomfort for some people when drunk strong on an empty stomach.

If you want a gentle cup, brew Tetley green tea with water just off the boil (around 80°C) for 2 minutes, and drink it with or after food. If you are looking for a stomach settling tea, peppermint, ginger (a blend like Twinings Lemon and Ginger is an easy start) or fennel are better bets.

Is Tetley tea good for you? What about Tetley black tea?

If you searched “Tetley tea benefits”, you may mean the classic black tea, which is what most people buy, and the brew behind the British habit of a spot of tea. Short answer: yes, plain Tetley black tea is a healthy everyday drink too.

Black tea comes from the same plant as green tea but is fully oxidised, so its catechins turn into theaflavins and thearubigins. It has about the same caffeine as Tetley green tea (30 to 50 mg). Large observational studies link drinking two or more cups of black tea a day with a lower risk of heart disease and death from any cause, though again that shows association, not cause.

Where black tea goes wrong is what goes in it. Two sugars per mug, several times a day, adds up fast. Milk is fine for most people. If you enjoy strong black teas, our post on lesser known Indian tea varieties is worth a look.

Downsides of Tetley green tea (good or bad?)

Green tea is safe for most adults, but a few things are worth knowing:

  • Iron. Tea reduces how well you absorb iron from plant foods. If you have low iron, drink tea between meals rather than with them.
  • Sleep. 33 mg of caffeine late in the evening can still affect light sleepers.
  • Medicines. Green tea can interact with a few drugs, including some blood pressure medicines and blood thinners. If you take regular medication, ask your pharmacist.
  • Flavoured versions. Check the label for sugar or sweeteners if you are watching what you eat.

How to get the most from Tetley green tea

  • Choose Pure Green if health is your main goal.
  • Use water at about 80°C, not boiling, and steep 2 to 3 minutes. Hotter and longer makes it bitter.
  • Two to four cups a day is the range most studies look at.
  • Skip the sugar. A slice of fresh lemon is fine, and is handy if you drink it while fasting.

FAQ

Is Tetley green tea good for you?

Yes. Plain Tetley green tea is a low calorie drink with catechin antioxidants and moderate caffeine. It may help focus and slightly lower LDL cholesterol. It is not a weight loss or disease prevention product.

What does Tetley green tea do to the body?

Within an hour, its caffeine and L theanine give a calm, alert feeling. Over time, regular green tea is linked with slightly better cholesterol and lower heart disease risk, though much of that evidence is observational.

Does Tetley green tea have caffeine?

Yes. Tetley lists 33 mg of caffeine per cup of its green tea (US), and says a cup of its green or black tea contains 30 to 50 mg depending on the bag and brewing time.

Is Tetley tea good for you?

Plain Tetley black or green tea is a healthy everyday drink. The benefits come from tea in general, not the brand, and they shrink if you add a lot of sugar.

Is Tetley green tea good or bad for your stomach?

It can be either. There is no strong evidence it improves gut health, and strong green tea on an empty stomach can cause nausea in some people. Brew it lighter and drink it with food.

Does Tetley green tea help with weight loss?

Only a little. Trials show green tea causes very small weight loss on its own. Its real value is replacing sugary drinks.

Is Tetley green tea good for your skin?

There is no good evidence that drinking it improves skin. Most skin research uses green tea applied to the skin or concentrated extracts.

Bottom line

Tetley green tea is a good, cheap, low calorie everyday drink, and so is Tetley black tea. The benefits are green tea benefits: a calm caffeine lift, a small boost to cholesterol numbers, and an easy swap for sugary drinks. Choose Pure Green, brew it gently, skip the sugar, and ignore claims that it cures anything.
